Logging In

Once access to the cluster has been set up for you, follow these steps to get logged in.

  1. Install the Google Authenticator application on your mobile phone.  Google Authenticator (GA) is used to manage the one-time, 6-digit verification codes you'll need to log in.
  2. Using an SSH client, start by connecting to the Nova head node:
    ssh <ISU Net ID>@nova.its.iastate.edu
Where <ISU Net ID> is your Iowa State University account name.  The first time you try to login you will get a message saying:
******** Your GA was not setup yet. ********
Please check your email and follow the instuctions there before attempting to login again.
****** Please check your email ******

The  e-mail will be sent to your ISU e-mail address with further instructions for adding the key you need to set up the Google Authenticator account.

  3. Once you install the verification key to Google Authenticator, connect to nova.its.iastate.edu again.  You will prompted for the 6-digit verification code generated by Google Authenticator under the label for <your netid>@ISUHPCClusters. ( The verification code will refresh every 30 seconds.)
  4. After you enter the verification code, you will be prompted to enter your ISU Net ID password.

Please note, if you plan to use Nova OnDemand, you must login to Nova via ssh at least once before Nova OnDemand will be available.
